Happy Halloween with a Spider Hair Band

Heyhey everyone and Happy Halloween!
Due to the party last Saturday and the baking day on Sunday, we're taking it easy tonight :) But at work it was a whole different story! Halloween on a week day, now there an interesting concept... Let me begin with Sunday's baking day though.

I made two types of muffin: apple/cinnamon (in brown) and banana/white chocolate (in blue). They were a hit at the office today!

I also made these cute brooms with paper bags and leftover straws, electrical tape, ribbon and tissue paper. Inside there is a spider web candy bag, which I still had from my Boston trip, filled with candy. The idea came from our dear Martha Stewart of course, though a little simplified as the UK doesnt do paper bags very well... I handed these out in the office as well, it was so funny as people seemed a little scared to open them, hihi!

Of course I also had some crafts to finish (dont I always?). A little while ago, I found the perfect spider headband online, complete with tutorial! I knew I wanted to make this but had to find supplies first. Then, late last night, I gathered what I had and made it the best I could. The original:

It looks amazing! The sparly headband isnt quite my thing but the spider sure is cool!

As there was no way I could find a black gem this big for even a reasonable price, I had to improvise. Remember the steampunk handbag? No? This one:

Well, this was one side of it...

In storage, some of the black gems came out. Perfect for my hair band :) As it is a pointy gem I need a round one for the head as well which of course I also didnt have, but I did find some white ones that I took off an old costume once. So I borrowed some of the bf's spraypaint (shhh!) and painted it black. Covered in glossy MP and we're home free :) For the legs I used some of those green wires that you get at the florist to hang the card on. I needed them once and the florist gave me a lot of them so still had those. The beads came from a Primark bracelet which was only £1 and bought especially for this. I only used about half the beads on it... Curious yet? Check this out:

I think it looks pretty good! The round bit is the black felt so you can see some glue here and there but otherwise I LOVE it! So now that the food was ready, the hair band was on, the pics were taken, it was time to go to work...

After handing out the muffins and the brooms, there were cookies! Had to take some pics first... This was my Spider Office Lady outfit for today LOL. I was allowed to come Halloweeny, as long as it wasnt too crazy ;)

Just had to share this, lovely pic showing the cookies and the hair band ;)

Want one? I wont share the recipe as there are tons online already and I would need to find the one I used exactly... I printed it out, that's how long ago I found this LOL They were a little oversized but no one seemed to mind getting an oversized cookie ;)

Then, when I got home, the bf had prepared a celebratory snack for us. Yay! I loooove this! Plus the colour makes it very Halloweeny :)

While I was waiting for the main course to cook, I just had to take another picture of my shiney new hair band :) I love it! Oh, I guess I mentioned that already ;) Ignore the glue bits though, oops!

But then the food was done, tuna back (yes again, it was easy and simple to Halloweenify), I added blue food colouring to the cream, much to the bf's disgust hihi. This will be funny, we have leftovers for lunch!

I also baked these cupcakes on Sunday, they make the perfect dessert. Plus we still had some pie leftover....

And so we are currently having horror night. We just watched the Crow and have just started on the Exorcist marathon. Well, it will be part 1 as I do have to work tomorrow... but the thought is there. Hope you all had a great Halloween also! *happy wave while snuggling deeper into skull Slanket to watch movie*

Party under a Halloween Moon

Hi all,
It is time for my annual Halloween party! This year I am also participating in the Witches Tea Party under a Halloween Moon :)

Frosted Petunias

Because after all, in England 'tea' can also mean dinner hihi. So get ready for this year's yummies! First of all, the snack table:

Finger carrots with various dips. I covered the container in orange paper to make it look nicer. The almonds are stuck on with houmous. I also made some pumpkin roll-ups as I found orange tortillas in the last second.

I made more tortilla crackers with my new cookie cutters, we had witches hats, shoes, brooms and cauldrons. It was like an edible accessory shop! ;) The cauldron pot contains homous (I looove houmous!).

Cauldrons with spicy crisps and of course some cornichons :) I used an empty Halloween candle pot to hold the tooth picks.

I used my shrunken heads to act as a rim around the table. It looked wicked! I just strung them onto some ribbon and taped the ribbon onto the table.

Of course the pumpkins were also featured. Here you also see the eyeball radishes by the way. And some really creepy people in the background picture LOL

The coffin pumpkin was also on the snack table. Oh yes, the 'table cloths' were from Poundland and were actually scarves, but it look amazing and I didnt have to gather tons of spiders in the end :)

Before I take you to dinner, let me show you my wreath. I wanted to write a whole post about this, but this will have to do now. A long long time ago, I bought one of those twine wreaths and it has been lying around ever since. I finally spraypainted it black, wrapped two strings of beaded ribbon around it in purple and orange (bought last year at the 99p store), added four glitter spiders (Poundland, pack of 4 for £1, score!), and attached two skulls I bought at CVS during my trip to Boston two years ago. I hung it on a black ribbon. I actually quite like it, even though it took forever trying to get this to look ok. There are so many great wreaths out there!

These were made last year but this year I bought some electrical tea candles so I could actually light these up. These are on the very top of the stairs, past the pumpkin lights from last year which of course were also used.

Ready for dinner? The table is set, the background movie has started... here we go!

For the 'aperitif' I made mummy sausages. The guests were like 'oh yummy, we liked those last time', hihi. At least my dinners make an impression :)

For the started I made these witchy aliens eating maggots/brains. They were supposed to be aliens but the witch hat cracker made them look more like witches.

The main course were pumpkin/potato mash monsters with spinach tentacles and intestins (read: chipolatas). The salad came in the orange pepper Jack-O-Lantern. It was yumm! Plus I cooked for an army so no need to cook tonight ;)

The dessert was my pumpkin-praline pie with ice-cream and pastry brooms. Again, I used my new cookie cutters and painted the brooms with food colouring before baking them. Afterwards I added the lines with edible ink.

Taadaa! Yes that's me... I just did not find the time to make a costume this year and by the time the guests arrived I was still wearing my apron. Not so good... So I put on something quickly. I am supposed to be Storm, from the X-Men. I had the long-haired wig on before but it was really annoying me with cooking so I swapped it for the short version. After all, in the movie Halle Berry changes her hair as well LOL. Not my greatest outfit I am sorry to say but I just ran out of time.

My creepy pumpkin face was displayed on the side table, along with lots of paper trees, candles, and mini pumpkins.

One last atmosphere picture, before the evening was over. Everyone was full and sleepy... It was a very grown-up party ;) We also played 'Bugman' which is one of the bf's favourite board games.

Today I have to bake lots of things for work tomorrow, and prepare some more things as well. I am currently watching the Ring as well. One of the girls at work asked me for costume tips and due to her long black hair, I suggested Samara from The Ring and she sent me a pic and it was amazing!!! I actually thought it was a really good idea for myself as well (would just need some black hairspray) but I looked in 10 different shops and just could not find a white dress... So Storm it was. Next year I hope to be able to make a much better effort :) Ok, back to my movie now. Hope you enjoyed my party, I must now prepare for the remainder of Halloweekend...

Halloweening - Upcycled Shrunken Heads Tutorial

Hi all,
I didnt manage to carve a pumpkin tonight as I got home quite late from work and shopping for tomorrow's Halloween dinner. But I do want to share my shrunken heads with you, they are so cool! I was inspired by the shrunken heads on the Night Bus in Harry Potter. You know, this one:

Remember now? (image borrowed here)

Last year I bought some miniature Christmas baubles in various shades of brown to make some Halloween deco with which of course I never did as I once again ran out of time. Oops... then I wanted to sell them on eBay and the sale fell through. But a few days ago I had the best idea. I was going to make shrunken heads, and this time I even made a tutorial :) This was done quite spontaneously in the evening so the pics are not perfect but they're fun, hihi!

Gather supplies: mini Christmas baubles, various colours of wool, googley eyes, buttons (not pictured), scissors, glue gun, glitter glue or sharpie.

Glue two googley eyes on each bauble and cut the wool in strips of about 3 inches long. I chose light colours for the first batch like light pink, grey, white, and green.

Gather a bunch and make a nice mix with it. The amount of threads here is totally optional, it depends how thick you want the hair to be. Dont make it too big, you'll need two of these for each head.

Use one of the strings to tie the bunch together in the middle, getting a result like this. Yeah, this is my leg, I did this on the floor.

Add some hot glue to the top of the bauble like so, making sure that the glue goes into the grooves to glue the tip to the bauble.

Add a bunch of 'hair' and press the centre into the glue.

Turn the 'head' around and add some glue to the tip, the same as before. Also add some vertical lines like shown here.

Press the second bunch with the centre into the glue on the tip, and quickly (or the glue will harden) press some strings into the vertical glue lines, creating the back of the hair which wont move off the head.

You result so far should be like this. Now use glitter glue (or any other writing device like a sharpie) to create facial features.

With mouths, you batch should look something like this. Sadly, at this point I had run out of googley eyes, but a little later on I thought of buttons! :)

As I only had dark colours, I used dark hair for these (black, red, grey and white), and I added the buttons and some glitter to create different eye expressions (is that a word?).

And taadaa! A whole batch of shrunken heads :)

I still need to hang them up but I havent yet decided where I wanted to do this exactly, but I'll let you know tomorrow. I'm thinking either along the stairs or on the edge of the table. Anyhoo, I'll let you know :)

Halloweening - Another Pumpkin

Hi all,

OMG, yet another day where I was home only at 9pm so the whole preparing for Halloween evenings are few and far between. And my party is on Saturday! Plus I have at least another 5 items to blog about...

But as it's nearly midnight, I will just share my latest pumpkin with you, at least I've done something :) It's a simple design but it looks good nonetheless I think. I just dont have the time right now... I hope you like it also!

One pumpkin, three views. It turned out quite evil-looking :)

I also made pumpkin seeds of course :) The girls at work are loving them!

Ok, it's past midnight, I have to go to bed... more work tomorrow... Good night everyone!

Halloweening - Pirate Bath Mat

Hi all!
OMG, only 3 days to go until Halloween weekend! Well, you didnt actually think that I would only celebrate on Monday now did you? ;) I still have so many projects in the making and I just dont have time...

Today I went to a few shops after work and bought some small supplies. Spiders for my wreath (my first ever, now there is a challenge!), a cool scarf from the £ store which I'll use for a table cloth and which I am sure will look wicked, and some other small things. I even found a CD of Stevie Nicks in the £ store :) Good music to carve by :)

Remember my bathroom transformation from last year? Well, this year I decided to add some finishing touches. One in particular I might add. I made some cool bottles which of course remained there indefinitely...

See, arent they cool? The spiders have needed some re-glueing but all is fixed and still looking piratey

The whole bathroom (read: loo) looked great except for an awful bathmat that I'd bought some years back. It was turquoise, bleached from the washing, and other than keeping my feet warm in the morning (you know) it was really ugly and useless.

See what I mean? Awful... The bf hated it so much and has begged me to throw it out multiple times.

So from scraps from the Blood Elf dress and the black medieval dress, I made this:

LOL, I've had these remnants for years and I am so glad to have finally put them to good use. I know the design isnt great, I dont have a Cricut. I tried printing stuff from clip art but kept forgetting where I put it all the time, so the whole thing is freehand. For the shape I just copied the old (and somewhat misshapen) bathmat. The rickrack was also still on hand so this was completely free and frugal :) And most of all, the bf loves it! And it keeps my feet even warmer than the other one so it's definitely a hit.

Of course I also had to do some carving, and this is tonight's result:

I love it! This was actually the design I wanted to carve yesterday but the other pumpkin didnt match so well. This is so cute I think!

Task list for today: done. It's nearly midnight and I have only just sat down to blog and then I have to go to sleep already. Oh my... but tomorrow we're having leftovers for dinner and there will be no shopping so extra time for Halloweening, yay!
